The D&O Diary is on assignment in Europe this week, with a first stop in Oslo, Norway’s capital city, located at the northern end of Oslofjord (as shown in the accompanying picture). Oslo is a city in transformation; its urban area population has grown by over one-third since 2000, to over 1 million. At times during our visit, the city seems like a gigantic construction site. Its location at about 60 degrees northern latitude means that in late May, the sun rises just after 4 am, and the sun doesn’t set until nearly 10:30. The evening twilight lingered until well after midnight.

A Visit to Hong Kong
The D&O Diary’s Asia Pacific travels continued this past week in Hong Kong for meetings and to participate in the PLUS Hong Kong Professional Liability Symposium. Early September is late in Hong Kong’s monsoon season, which meant that conditions were generally hot and steamy throughout my visit. It also meant periodic drenching downpours that discouraged any idea of outdoor activities. Despite the less than ideal weather conditions, I did manage to get a little bit of a look around while I was in Hong Kong.

My European sojourn continued this week with a trip to Paris. I arrived in Paris on Monday morning, just days after the Friday night terrorist attacks. I had been unsure whether or not to come to Paris, and I wasn’t sure what I would find when I got there.

London Weekend
The D&O Diary is on assignment in Europe this week, with the first stop over the weekend in London. When I arrived at my hotel on Saturday morning I learned for the first time about the Friday night terrorist attacks in Paris, which had taken place while I was in transit. Since the primary purpose for my trip was to attend meetings this week in Paris (to which I planned to travel next after leaving London), these developments certainly put my trip plans in an entirely different and unsettling light. I spent most of my weekend in London trying to decide whether I should travel on to Paris from London or just return home after the weekend.
