Securities Lawsuit Filings

According to the latest report from Cornerstone Research, the number of securities class action lawsuit filings declined slightly in 2022 relative to 2021, although the number of “core” securities suit filings increased slightly compared to 2021. The report, which is entitled “Securities Class Action Filings: 2022 Year in Review,” and which was published in conjunction with the Stanford Law School Securities Class Action Clearinghouse, notes that the number of new lawsuits involving Section 11 allegations rose 2022, likely due to the surge in IPOs during 2021. Largely due to a significant decline in the number of filings during May and June, the number of federal court securities class action lawsuit filings in the first half of 2020 was well below the number of filings at the same point last year – although still well above long-term historical levels. The number of first half filings was significantly boosted by a cluster of securities suit filings against cryptocurrency companies that were sued on a single day in April, as well as by the number of coronavirus outbreak-related securities suits.

Plaintiffs filed federal court securities class action lawsuits at  “near-record levels” during the first six months of 2019, according to a new report from Cornerstone Research. The July 31, 2019 report, entitled “Securities Class Action Filings: 2019 Midyear Assessment,” notes that the elevated filing levels continued in the year’s first half despite reduced numbers of merger objection lawsuit filings. In addition to the number of federal court filings, there were a significant number of state court securities suit filings, bringing overall filing levels close to all-time highs.
