Tower of London

The D&O Diary’s European Sojourn finished up last week with a return visit to London. I returned to London in order to attend an event postponed from the week before. Although the postponement required me to extend my travels for a few more days, it did also mean that I got a bonus day in London, as reflected in the pictures below.Continue Reading Back in London

The D&O Diary was on assignment in Europe last week, with first stops in Dublin and London. Late January may not seem like the ideal time to visit Ireland and England. Though the weather was chilly and darkness gathered early in the afternoon, it turned out not to be a bad time to visit after all.Continue Reading Dublin and London

The D&O Diary’s European sojourn continued this week with a stop in London. Fortunately, the beautiful weather we enjoyed in Paris followed us to London, where blue skies and warm sunshine prevailed throughout our visit. It was only a brief stop for us in London before heading on to other destinations, but it was still a great visit.Continue Reading London in June

St. James’s Park, London

This past week, The D&O Diary was on assignment in London. London has many attractions, but weather is not usually one of them. However, during the recent early July days while we were visiting, the weather was just great. As a result, we spent almost all of our time there exploring London out-of-doors.

It is with a great deal of pleasure that I finally get to say this again after a long wait: The D&O Diary was on assignment in London last week. With two COVID vaccinations under my belt and a booster shot to boot, I just decided it was finally time to start traveling again. It was great being back in London and re-acquainting myself with one of my favorite cities. Pandemic precautions made some parts of the trip awkward, but in most other ways it felt almost normal to be traveling again.

For a time in the late 18th century, a group of men met weekly in a London pub for dinner and conversation. In and of itself, this may seem unremarkable. What is remarkable is that the group included among its members some of the most extraordinary individuals of the age – or indeed, of any age. The group included Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, Edmund Burke, Edward Gibbon, and Adam Smith; arguably, the greatest British critic, biographer, political philosopher, historian, and economist of all time. Others in the group included others equally famous at the time, including the painter Joshua Reynolds, the playwrights Richard Sheridan and Oliver Goldsmith, and David Garrick, the greatest actor of the century. The group called itself The Literary Club, but it came to be known simply as The Club. Harvard University Literature Professor Leo Damrosch tells the group’s fascinating story in his excellent and entertaining book, The Club: Johnson, Boswell, and the Friends Who Shaped an Age.

An unusual sight: the Lloyd’s building in the sunshine

The D&O Diary was on assignment in London this past week, primarily to participate in an event organized in connection with the Mayor of London’s Climate Action Week conference. It was a great week in London, primarily because of the conference, but also because of the unusually pleasant weather. It was also interesting being in London for the Fourth of July holiday.

The D&O Diary is on assignment in Europe this week, with a first stop in London for meetings and for an industry event. I have been to London many times before but I have to say I think I like it more every time I travel there. And it is particularly enjoyable to be there in the Spring, when the flowers are in bloom and the trees are blossoming.

Next week I will be publishing my annual Top Ten Stories in the World of D&O for 2018. For now, over the holidays, I am posting some alternative top ten lists. Last week, I published the list of the Top Ten Places That You Might Not Think of to Visit and the Top Ten Top Travel Destinations. In putting together both of my prior travel lists, I omitted a number of cities that are at the top of everyone’s own travel destination lists. In today’s post, I am going to focus on one of those particular destination cities, one of my favorite places on the planet, the great city of London.

The D&O Diary was on assignment in Europe last  week, with a first stop for a short visit in London for meetings there. It isn’t always sunny in London in November. But when the sun does shine, it can be pretty special. The sun shone brightly in London while I was there and I was fortunate that I had a little bit of time in the mornings before my meetings to walk around and enjoy the scene, before moving on to my next stop on the travel itinerary.
