The accelerated pace of large corporate bankruptcy filings continued in the last 12 months, as high interest rates, inflation, and other factors continued to take their toll. According to a new report from Cornerstone Research, the number of filings during the second half of 2023 and the first half of 2024 were more than 40% above the long-term annual averages. According to a new report from Cornerstone Research, the number of large corporate bankruptcies “surged” in the first half of 2023 compared to the number of filings in the most recent years. The report, which is entitled “Trends in Large Corporate Bankruptcies and Financial Distress: Midyear 2023 Update” reports that the number of large corporate bankruptcy filings in the first half of this year already exceeds the total number of filings for the full year 2022. There were more U.S. bankruptcy filings in 2020 than in any year since the global financial crisis, but the number of bankruptcy filings in the first half of 2021 returned closer to historical levels, according to a new report from Cornerstone Research. The report, entitled “Trends in Large Corporate Bankruptcy and Financial Distress: Midyear 2021 Update,” looks at bankruptcy filings involving private and public companies with assets over $100 million.
